SCARLETT’S KNIGHT: She Ain’t Crazy

Chapter 8

Kaz

“Why are the faces blacked out?” I ask still looking at the drawings with a frown.

“Because I can’t see their faces. They are always behind a dangling light.”

“And you have the same dream every time?” I ask her again. I can imagine the horror of having lucid dreams every time you sleep. Since I don’t know how it feels, I can only try to understand what she is going through.

“Yes,” She says in a shrug.

Maybe I can put another smile on her face again. I know just the thing. I adjust her head and reach for my phone on the bedside table and text Alex.

“What are you doing?” She asks curiously, trying to peek on my phone.

“Texting,” I reply nonchalantly.

“Now? How rude!” She says in a huff. I can’t help but chuckle. She is so adorable.

Have George get some of Red’s stuff from the apartment. -K

Did you have something specific in mind, sir? -A

Yes, get her drawing book. Also, have him buy her a big drawing book complete with a stand, drawing charcoal, pencils, erasers some paint and brushes. -K

Basically, anything that you could think of that a painter needs. -K

Okay sir, anything else? -A

Yeah, arrange for a wheelchair. She will need it to move around the house. -K

Set the stuff on the meadow one you are done. Am busting her out of here. -K

Okay, sir. I will let you know when it is all set up. -A

“All done I am sorry about that,” I say placing my phone back on the bedside table. I hope she likes her surprise when she sees it.

I turn to her and look at her in the eye. She frowns. She can tell I want to tell her something.

“Spill,” she says.

“Do you want to talk to a shrink?” I ask, almost timidly.

“About what?” Are you kidding me?

“Your dreams,” I say exasperated. What else have we been talking about?

“I am not crazy,” She says slowly like she is talking to a three-year-old.

“I know that,” I say.

“Only crazy people talk to shrinks,” She says like it’s the most obvious thing in the world.

“Not true.”

“Is too. I don’t want anyone digging around inside my head,” she says now offended.

“Don’t you want to remember? Or at least make the bad dreams go away?”

“I do. But you heard the doctor. My memories will come back at their own time or may never come at all. I don’t want to see a shrink, drop it or you are getting on my shit list,” she says angrily.

“You have a shit list?”

“No, but I’m thinking of getting one.”

“Well. I wouldn’t want to be in your shit list, baby. I know how you get when you are angry.”

“Then drop it. I am not seeing a shrink and that is final!”

“Just think about it, okay?” I plead.

She is about to say something when there is a knock on the door. I have been saved by the bell, literally. Dr Kirwa and her neurologist Winfred walk in, all smiles no doubt privy to the last stages of our conversation.

“Well, well, sounds like the patient is doing well,” Dr Kirwa says with a knowing smile. Red rolls her eyes. A-ta girl. I don’t like him either. When she doesn’t reply, he turns to me.

“Mr. Kaz, may I ask why you are doing in the patient’s bed?”

“Err…lying down?” I say going for sarcasm. Seriously, where did they get this guy?

“The patient should be resting,” he says raising a brow.

“I don’t see how me lying here is hindering that doctor. Is there something you needed?” I ask, raising my own brow. He is about to answer when Dr Winfred clears her throat. All our eyes shift to her.

“Well, Red, your lab results came back clear. Your head injury is progressing on well. It will be healed in no time. Mr. Kaz, you should start filling in the blanks of her life before the accident. It will help her get on with her life smoothly.  I expect it will be slow to recover your memories. It might take years, but I am confident you will regain them.”

“Thank you, doctor,” Red says in a smile.

“You will, however, start getting mild headaches. It is perfectly normal. I will prescribe some pain relievers and you can collect them on your way out after being discharged. However, if you get migraines, I need to be notified ASAP,” She says in authority. “Any questions?”

“Yes, what are migraines?” Red asks, innocently.

“They are the bad headaches,” Dr Kirwa jumps in.

“So, there are good kind of headaches?” I stifle a laugh. This lady could make the smartest of people look and sound stupid.

“What doctor Kirwa means is that headaches are mild and mostly manifest as pain and pressure in the whole head. Migraines, on the other hand, involve symptoms like nausea, pain behind one eye or ear, pain in the temples, seeing spots or flashing lights, sensitivity to light and/or sound temporary vision loss and vomiting. They are usually on a particular part mostly on one side of the head.”

“Okay, doc. Understood.”

“Good. Dr Kirwa has some good news to share as well,” She says nodding her head at him.

“Well, we will be removing your cast this afternoon! Your fiancée arranged for a physiotherapist to work with you at home. We will also give you a walking boot to support your leg and a hand brace for your arm and fingers.”

Red’s smile visibly widens as the doctor continues speaking.

“You mean am going to walk again? This is so awesome!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

The doctors and I laugh at her awkward attempt at a happy dance and before I know it, I am being pulled in for a kiss.

Short, I Know. It is kind of a filler chapter. I have been MIA. Life happened and we have been so busy at work.  Thank you for bearing with me. You guys are awesome. Writer’s block is a bitch as well. Grrrrrrrrr. 🙂

  1. Did you know writer’s block has an equally bitchy sister? Reader’s block. That thing hurts more than a migraine.

But you have been MIA. But Kaz redeemed himself. That holding though I visualized spooning did it for her. Plus he is somehow won her confidence. And trust.

Great thing though, her drawing talent remained untouched.

    1. I know, believe me I feel bad when I disappoint my readers. Hopefully work will start slowing down.
I don’t think Kaz knows what he is doing. He has never behaved like that before, with anyone. Red is slowly changing him.
